It is time to look closely at carbonate reservoirs adjacent shales using new technologies and knowledge about sequence stratigraphy and reservoir characterization. Within a massive regional resource play, the carbonates can contain sweet spots and constitute bailouts for a financially difficult venture.
One of the keys could be the use of electric, acoustic and visual borehole image logs that, when analyzed together, can help detect fracture patterns. The fracture patterns in the image logs can be critical in developing carbonate reservoirs, shales plays, and, above all, in detecting and designing a good hydrofrac program for the sweet spots.
